“Woman” said the man in Eden,
“Taken out of me,
you are everything I’ve needed,
welcome to eternity”
-
“Woman” said the Son to his mum, at the wedding,
“my time has not yet come”;
hear the servants backwards treading.
Still she says to them ‘do what he asks’;
the words ‘come fill your jars’ echo around.
-
“Woman” says the thirsty to the scared one at the well.
She becomes a preacher;
crowds hear “Christ is here to dwell”.
-
“Woman” says He without sin, to the one they caught,
“I don’t condemn you either, go and sin no more”.
-
“Woman” says the Lord to the mother full of faith;
crumbs give way to plate and table place.
-
“Woman” says the Teacher to the crippled, now the free,
“their sabbath rules are broken,
but you’re healed”.
-
“Woman” says the son to his mum, from the cross,
“I know this loss hurts
but Mum, please don’t be alone.
Here’s the one I love,
make him your home”
-
“Woman” says the gardener to the seeker
“Who’re you looking for?”
There’s nothing to fear.
Watch her heart swell,
for when He says “Mary”
He means “I am here,
go and tell”.
-
Oh, what a glorious word “woman” would be
if that were all the story
but
“Woman” said Adam in fig leaves,
“she gave it to me”
and
“Woman” says the pastor to the jury
so they let him walk free,
then
“Woman”, scoffs the alpha to the wolf pack,
“Go home”
(and don’t come back).
and
“Woman”, says the husband to his helper
her only role to give him what he lacks.
Until,
“Woman” said the prophet to the barren,
“Sing, spread over earth.
Wait for the virgin and the birth
your promise keeping God will use
to begin his plan for all things new”.
All so that
one day,
“Woman” he’ll say to you and me,
“Welcome to eternity”.
